As time passes, a foam roof can become weakened due to its exposure to the elements. A complete replacement of the roofing is usually not necessary. Recoating the roof should be enough to extend the life of the roof and ensure that it is durable enough to stand up to the elements. If you have a foam roof, here are some tips for recoating.

Choose the Right Time of Year

If the weather is too hot, the foam roof will not set properly. If the weather is too cold, the foam can freeze and lose some of its durability. Therefore, it is important to apply the new coating of foam at the appropriate time of the year.

Spring is usually a good time to apply a new coat. Wait until there is at least a week of good weather forecast before starting. The warm weather will be enough to help the foam dry and set without freezing.

Check for Damage

Before you start to apply the new foam covering, you need to check your roof for existing damage. The damage will need to be repaired before you can recoat.

There are some instances in which you will have to stop and call in a roofing contractor to repair the roof. For instance, if the foam has orange peering through, it is a sign that there is moisture beneath it. If you spray the foam without taking care of the moisture issue, your roof could become structurally weakened.

Clean the Roof

The roof needs to be cleaned before applying the foam. The foam will not adhere as easily to a roof that is dirty, and the dirt and other debris can also become trapped in the roofing.

You can opt to use a pressure washer to ensure the roof is clean. If you do use one, make sure you take the necessary precautions to avoid damage to your roof. For instance, do not stand too close to the roofing with the hose. After washing the roof, allow it to dry completely before starting. It could take as much as a day for it to properly dry.

To ensure the recoating is performed properly, contract with a roofing contractor. The contractor can check for damage to the roofing, fix any problems that exist, and apply the recoating. The contractor can also provide you with an assessment of how much longer you have with the roofing. For more information, contact a professional in your area or visit a website like http://www.dodgefoamandcoatings.com.
