There's a superstition that suggests if a pigeon drops poo on you it's supposed to be good luck. When a flock of pigeons drop poo on your roof and in your gutters and chimney, it's definitely not good luck and could lead to costly repairs as well as health risks for you and your family members. Here are a few ways pigeon droppings can destroy your home and create health risks.

Asphalt-Shingled Roofing

The white goo of pigeon droppings is an insoluble combination of uric acid and poo. The acidity can slowly dissolve the asphalt of the shingles and cause extensive damage. The protective granule layer on the tops of your shingles will wash away from the shingles as the asphalt dissolves. The damage can become so severe that your roof will be susceptible to leakage, especially when the pigeon droppings are more concentrated in one particular area on your roof.

Solution: Hire a roofing contractor to inspect your roof and, if necessary, repair or replace the damaged asphalt shingles. Hire a pest control company to install pigeon deterrent devices on your roof, such as spikes and owl decoys.

Gutters & Downspouts

In the pigeon droppings, the solid material or poo sometimes contains seeds that were not digested by the birds. Although the white goo is insoluble, the solid materials can wash away from the shingles and end up in your gutters and downspouts. There, the seeds can sprout and grow and eventually cause blockages, particularly if they are allowed to grow into saplings.

Blocked gutters can cause water to seep upwards and into the roofing materials. During the winter months, this water can freeze and cause ice dam formations. Ice dams can lift shingles because water expands when it freezes. Alternatively, the water may run over the sides of the gutters and flood your basement or crawlspace.

Solution: Regularly clear debris and seeds from your gutters and downspouts.

Chimney

Bird droppings carry diseases that could affect you and your family members when there is an accumulation of droppings in your chimney. Droppings down a chimney can contaminate the air inside your home with diseased spores and bacteria. Two diseases that are caused by breathing in air that has been contaminated by bird droppings are cryptococcosis and histoplasmosis. Another health risk of droppings is food poisoning because there's a risk of salmonella bacteria growth anywhere there is an accumulation of bird droppings.

Solution: Hire a chimney sweep to clean pigeon droppings from your chimney. Install a chimney cap to prevent droppings from entering your chimney.
